On this new release PARTITAS FOR SOLO CELLO Orange Mountain Music is pleased to present the world premiere recording of Partita No 2 for Solo Cello performed by world renowned soloist and new music champion Matt Haimovitz. The album is rounded out with Matt Haimovitz performing two more selections of Glass music for solo cello including The Paris Sky from his Book of Longing song cycle based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen, and The Secret Agent, a score that Glass composed in the 1996 for the film by Christopher Hampton based on the story by Joseph Conrad.

This collection includes two rather unique Glass' compositions: Partitas No.1 and No.2 for solo Cello.Alongside Partita for solo Violin, Sonata for Violin and Piano, String Quartet No.7 and a few of his new etudes for Piano, these pieces reveal the romantic side of the aged Glass that barely could be traced in his previous works.The previous release of the Partita No.1 was performed by Wendy Sutter whom the Partita was written for. It is quite different from Haimovitz's interpretation. The sheer amount of passion in Sutter's performance makes the piece sound like a Baroque/19th-century composition, while Haimovitz's performance may sound more like Glass. As a fan, I am very much pleased to see Glass composing deeply intimate and personal music.
