Both with lights off and lights on this laser level is clearly visible. The distance is more than ample for an average to large size room. (I have not yet tested beyond 40')I love the fact that this came with a case, although I am not wild about the fact that it does not easily accommodate the mount. I am also not terribly enthusiastic about the rechargeable internal battery - once it fails this unit will no longer be functional. However, at the price point, it is worth purchasing another one when that day comes.Once we are done setting up our training room, we will be using this to hang whiteboards on either side of our conference room. Testing and measuring opposite sides have shown the line is level around the room - which will make hanging both boards much easier.In comparison: Having used multiple laser levels, my most recent acquisition before this was a similar priced Bosch 30' for use around the office. That was the first laser level to disappoint. It was accurate, but the laser was weak so it did little for items over 10' wide. I also had to purchase a case separately for the Bosch. My plans now for the Bosch are to pull its batteries and to throw it in the toolbox as a backup.
