If you’ve been fiddling around with guitar in any capacity there’s a very high chance you’ve come across the basic minor pentatonic shape. It’s pretty easy to pick out and even easier to recognize in a musical context, but I’ve never really dug in to study and master the scale across the neck. This, like other Fundamental Changes books I’ve purchased, is a wonderful intro class on the concept that provides all the basic knowledge one would need to start improvising their own pentatonic licks and solos! The content is broken down well, with each chapter focusing either on a scale shape or application along with mini theory and lick lessons to bring everything together. The key to this book/series is how the text, tablature, audio examples and playing along help to CEMENT this stuff into my brain. The concepts surround you and you get intimately involved, but the workload never feels overwhelming. Even if it did, the book is meant to be taken at your own pace. If a chapter a week works for you, awesome! If you need to go slower, no problem either! This isn’t a guided routine, so you’ll need some drive to run this material/work it into your daily practice but the effort has been paying off well for me! Currently on chapter six and I’m already confidently improvising leads in random keys (pro tip: make yourself a playlist of backing tracks on Spotify/Apple Music/etc. in various keys. Hit shuffle. Test yourself!).
